Rajasthan Government, The National has an article about a controversial law in Rajasthan, India that requires child marriages to be registered. Activists argue the law legalizes child marriages. The government argues that the law protects property and child custody rights of the children being married off.
Laws are not going to change centuries old traditions in an instant. This is a tough situation because both sides have a valid point. Child marriage is rampant in Rajasthan (and other states).
A Unicef report on child protection said that in 2007 the number of child brides in India was 24.5 million and they constituted 38 per cent of the world's total child brides.
Only education will change things. Slowly. As illustrated in this UNICEF article about a young girl Arfa Khatun who refused to marry till she completed her education.
