First Girls School in India

First Girls School in India, Bhopal: Minorities in Madhya Pradesh have criticised plans to introduce the Bhagvad Gita in state-run schools, saying the scriptures of other religions should also be part of the syllabus, even as a section of Muslim leaders sees nothing wrong with it. The Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh has said the government should, if it has to, teach the scriptures of all religions and not just the Hindu scriptures. “We are not against introducing lessons from religious scriptures in schools. But all religions in the country should get equal representation,” Bhopal’s Archbishop Leo Cornelio told IANS.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had declared last week that his government was contemplating introducing the Gita in the school curriculum as “its study is necessary for moral education”.

“The Bhagvad Gita is a treasure of knowledge. Children should be imparted the knowledge of the Gita and there should be no politics over it,” Chouhan said.

But Cornelia said the move favouring just one religious text was against India’s secular character which respects all religions equally.

The archbishop said the church supports the idea of having lessons from scriptures as they will help inculcate values in students, but the problem is “ever since the BJP government came to power in the state in December 2003, it has made efforts to promote the Hindu religion alone”.

Madhya Pradesh Catholic Churches’ spokesman Father Anand Muttangal said: “We welcome the proposal of the government to include the religious scripture in the educational syllabus. We too have been asking the government to include religious education as part of the curriculum so that children will know about religions when they complete studies, but the thing is that here too it is selective.

“Plans to introduce only a Hindu religious book in the school curriculum are to be seen as an attempt to incite communal feelings in people. We would say the government must introduce all religious scriptures into the educational system in the larger interest of society,” he added.

Muslims are divided over the move.

“It is wrong to introduce the religious book of one community in the school curriculum,” All India Muslim Teohar Committee Ausaf Shahmeeri Khurram told IANS.

“If the government has any such plans, it should include the scriptures of all communities and sects,” he said.

But Muslim leaders like state Haj Committee chairman Salim Qureshi and Madhya Pradesh Minorities Committee’s former chief Anwar Mohammad Khan see nothing wrong in it.

“The Gita is a part of our tradition and culture and there is nothing wrong in studying it. Bringing fundamentalism in anything and everything is not correct,” said Qureshi.

He said the Gita is an instrument of knowledge and therefore there is nothing wrong in introducing it in schools. “Why should we see everything from a communal angle?” he asked.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government here had earlier faced opposition from the minorities over making “Surya Namaskar” (sun salutation) and yoga mandatory in its schools. It has also been at loggerheads with the minority communities over the singing of the national song “Vande Mataram”.

Sir M Vishweshwaraiah

Sir M VishweshwaraiahSir M Vishweshwaraiah, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, KCIE (other spellings include Visvesvaraya, Visweswaraiah, Vishweshwaraiah However, "Visvesvaraya" is recognised as official spelling; Kannada: ???? ?????????? ?????????????); 15 September 1860 14 April 1962) was a notable Indian engineer, scholar, and statesman born at Muddenahalli, near Kanivenarayanapura, in present day Chikballapur District of Karnataka State.

He is a recipient of the Indian Republic's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was also knighted as a Commander of the Indian Empire by King George V for his myriad contributions to the public good. Every year, 15 September is celebrated as the Engineer's Day in India in his memory. He is held in high regard as the first and pre-eminent Engineer of India..

Early years

Sir M. V. was born to Srinivasa Sastry and Venkachamma at Muddenahalli village, Kanivenarayanapura hobli, Chikkaballapur District of present-dayKarnataka, in what was then the princely state of Mysore. His father Srinivasa Sastry was a Sanskrit scholar and an authority on the Hindu scriptures, besides being an Ayurvedic practitioner. Sir M. V.'s ancestors actually hailed from the village of Mokshagundam near Giddalur in the Prakasam District of present-day Andhra Pradesh; they had migrated to Mysore state perhaps three centuries ago. The family name "Mokshagundam", preserves the memory of his association with Andhra Pradesh. His mother tongue was Telugu

The young Visvesvaraya lost his father at the age of 15. The family was resident at Kurnool of Andhra Pradesh when this calamity befell them; they moved back to Muddenahalli thereafter. Sir M. V. attended primary school at Chikkaballapur and high school at Bangalore. He earned his B.A. from the Madras University in 1881 and later studied civil engineering at the College of Science, Pune, now known as the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP).

Career as engineer

Upon graduating as an engineer, Visvesvaraya took up a job with the Public Works Department (PWD) of Bombay now known as Mumbai, and was later invited to join the Indian Irrigation Commission. He implemented an extremely intricate system of irrigation in the Deccan area. He also designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates which were first installed in 1903 at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune. These gates were employed to raise the flood supply level of storage in the reservoir to the highest level likely to be attained by its flood without causing any damage to the dam. Based on the success of these gates, the same system was installed at the Tigra dam in Gwalior and the Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam in Mandya but many of them say that it is in mysore

Visvesvaraya achieved celebrity status when he designed a flood protection system to protect the city of Hyderabad from floods. He was also instrumental in developing a system to protectVishakapatnam port from sea erosion.

Sir M. V. supervised the construction of the KRS dam across the Cauvery River from concept to inauguration. This dam created the biggest reservoir in Asia at the time it was built[citation needed]. Sir MV was rightly called the "Father of modern Mysore state" (now Karnataka): During his period of service with the Government of Mysore state, he was responsible for the founding of, under the aegis of that government, the Mysore Soap Factory, the Parasitoide laboratory, the Mysore Iron & Steel Works (now known as Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Limited) in Bhadravathi, the Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Institute, the Bangalore Agricultural University, the State Bank of Mysore, The Century Club, Mysore Chambers of Commerce and numerous other industrial ventures. He also encouraged private investment in industry during his tenure as Diwan of Mysore. He was also instrumental in charting out the plan for road construction between Tirumala and Tirupati. He was known for sincerity, time management and dedication to a cause.

As the Diwan of Mysore

After opting for voluntary retirement in 1908, he took a foreign tour to study industrialised nations and there after, for a short period he worked for Nizam of Hyderabad. He suggested flood relief measures for Hyderabad town, which was under constant threat of floods by Moosi river. Later, during November 1909, Visvesvaraya was appointed as Chief Engineer of Mysore State. Further, during the year, 1912, he was appointed as Diwan or First Minister of the princely state of Mysore. With the support of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, Maharaja of Mysore, Visvesvaraya made an arguably unprecedented contribution as Diwan to the all-round development of the state. Not only the Krishnaraja Sagara dam and reservoir, the steel works at Bhadravathi, the Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Institute at Bangalore, the University of Mysore, Bank of Mysore Limited (now State Bank of Mysore) at Bangalore [1913]Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Limited (KSDL) Govt Soap Factory [1916] and many other industries and public works owe their inception or active nurturing to him. He was instrumental in the founding of the "Government Engineering College" at Bangalore in 1917, one of the first engineering institutes in India. This institution was later named the "University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering" (UVCE) after its founder. It remains one of the most reputed institutes of engineering in Karnataka. He also commissioned several new railway lines in Mysore states.

After 3G Bonanza, Parties Want Raja’s Head Over 2G Fiasco

After 3G Bonanza, Parties Want Raja's Head Over 2G FiascoNew Delhi: Expressing surprise at Telecom Minister A Raja’s comparison of 2G Spectrum to PDS rice, BJP today alleged that he had indulged in “corruption and nepotism” to favour some companies and asked the Prime Minister to break his silence on the issue.

“The PDS rice is distributed to the economically deprived. The 2G spectrum was allotted to Reliance Communications, Airtel, Vodafone, Swan Telecom, Videocon, Unitech etc. Surely these are not deprived sections of the society, which needed to be subsidized by A Raja,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

She described Raja’s statement that difference between 2G and 3G spectrum is a difference between PDS rice and the Basmati rice as “astonishing”.

Alleging that 2G Spectrum went “for a song” as borne out by the auction of 3G which realised an amount of Rs 67,710 crore against Rs 1,651 crore for the former, BJP demanded a clarification from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Raja’s role in the earlier auction.

“How fair is the Prime Minister’s silence on this issue? How long will the Prime Minister look the other way and pretend that nothing has happened?… Only an FIR was filed by CBI in the case and chargesheet has not been filed as yet. 3G has only proved that the minister indulged in wrong practices,” Sitharaman said.

The main opposition hailed the success of 3G auction, saying it showed how auctions involved a process where the market mechanism determined the real cost of the asset being sold.

“Spectrum is a valuable national asset. It belongs to the government. When it is sold for to the private parties, the government must necessarily get the market price of the Spectrum,” Sitharaman said.

BJP also tried to take credit for “transparent auctioning” of 3G Spectrum, arguing that its criticism of 2G allocation had forced the government to be “fair this time”.

It also demanded that all issues related to 2G Spectrum be probed.

“Two of the allottees diluted their equity immediately upon the allocation of 2G Spectrum,” Sitharaman alleged.

The licence and the Spectrum, which they obtained for Rs 1,651 crore, acquired a valuation of two billion dollars, or over Rs. 9,000 crore, for dilution of equity, she said.

“Nine All India licences were allotted on this price. Even on this valuation the loss was over Rs 60,000 crore,” the BJP spokesperson claimed.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) too joined the 'sack Raja' chorus and asked him to quit immediately. “If the minister refuses to resign, the Prime Minister should sack him”, the party said.

The CPI-M said in a hard-hitting statement here that the outcome of the 3G spectrum auction convincingly proved that Raja was clearly involved in corrupt practices by selling 2G spectrum to some industrialists by manipulating Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommendations.

“Whereas 3G spectrum could fetch Rs.70,000 crore, 2G spectrum was sold at a paltry sum of Rs.2,000 crore. Raja had done so by blatantly violating the law, causing a huge loss to the public exchequer,” the party’s politburo said.

“Despite repeated demands made in parliament and outside, Raja is nonchalantly continuing to stick to his position. Such a situation cannot be allowed to be continued,” it said.

The CPI-M demanded that Raja immediately resign from his post “pending a high power enquiry into the scam”.

“If the minister refuses to resign, the Prime Minister should sack him to maintain the dignity of the high post A. Raja is holding in the government,” the statement said.

CWG: Onus On Kalmadi, Says Congress

CWGOnus on Kalmadi, says CongressNew Delhi: Beleaguered Commonwealth Games chief Suresh Kalmadi was in graver trouble on Thursday after the Congress party distanced itself from the mess by putting the onus on the IOA chief to clear his name. Brushing off any responsibility over the corruption in the Commonwealth Games, the Congress party said, "Kalmadi is not a representative of Congress on CWG panel. The OC must respond to CAG report," adding that it has 'nothing to do with the politics of sports'.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in its interim inspection report had found some discrepancies in choosing consultants for global broadcasting rights and sponsorship deal for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

The report found that the games Organising Committee of which Suresh Kalmadi is the chairman had awarded the sponsorship deal to Melbourne-based Sports Marketing and Management (SMAM) at a very cheap price, official sources said.

The sources said there was also a mention of Maxxam International in the interim report which raised questions on the procedures adopted for the Queen’s Baton Relay, held in London last year.

This deal for organising the event went to Maxxam which reportedly had emerged as the highest bidder.

Already, Klamadi is in a very tight spot with the opposition having raised the CWG issue in the Parliament. His aide TS Darbari has been sacked and reports are rife that Kalmadi himself was in the loop of the controversial AM Films deal during the QBR ceremony last year.

Air India Crash

Air India Crash: Latest update news about Air India Crash, About 150 people were killed when an Air India Express flying from Dubai overshot the runway after landing at the Mangalore airport near here early Saturday amid a drizzle and caught fire as it crashed into a forested gorge, authorities said.

A grim looking Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told reporters about three hours after the disaster that the Boeing 737 was carrying more than 160 people and “survivors were unlikely”.

“Except for five or six people who were rescued, we fear the rest of the passengers (and crew) may not have survived.” he told reporters in Bangalore, the state capital, before leaving for the crash site. “It is a grave tragedy.”

The plane was carrying 163 passengers and six crew members. The passengers included four infants.

The airport at Bajpe, about 30 km from Mangalore, is in a hilly area and considered one of the most difficult airports to take off and land. The area had been experiencing heavy rains for the last two days.

Aviation experts said the Mangalore airport required precision landing because there is hardly any overshoot area. There was no immediate official word, however, why the plane met with the accident.

The tragedy took place around 6.30 a.m. The pilot gave no distress signal before the plane went down.

Villagers from the neighbourhood were among the first to rush to the gorge as the plane crashed and broke into several pieces with a deafening roar and sending huge flames leaping into the sky.

Firemen and police personnel from the airport quickly began rescue operations, only to come across ghastly scenes of mangled bodie strew over a large area.

In no time, about 25 ambulances and over 20 fire tenders were involved in the frantic operation. But large crowds gathered, including many rushing all the way from the airport.

Some of the charred bodies still had the seat belts on.

Air India spokesman K. Swaminathan said the IX 812 overshot the runway while landing. He gave no further details.

The rescue operations were hit for an hour as the drizzle turned into heavy rains, with parts of the plane having rolled into ravines near the airport.

“It is a tragic incident,” Karnataka Home Minister V.S. Acharyal said.

Managalore airport manager Peter Abrahim said there were initial difficulties in reaching the accident.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condoled the loss of lives in the air crash at the Mangalore airport Saturday and ordered Rs.200,000 for the families of the dead and Rs.50,000 for the injured.

He also postponed an event scheduled at his official residence Saturday evening to celebrate his government’s one year in office during its second tenure.

LeT Readies Paragliders to launch air Attack on India

New Delhi : Security agencies are on maximum high-alert after intelligence inputs revealed LeT's dangerous new plan to use paragliders to conduct an air borne terror attack on Republic Day.

As per Home Ministry sources, LeT has acquired more than 50 paragliding equipment from Europe and is biding time to carry out an attack.

What makes the threat more credible is that it follows another report based on intelligence inputs that LeT and the al Qaeda are planning to hijack an Indian plane.

Sensing the gravity of the situation the Home Ministry has ordered security agencies to conduct mock drills to counter the possible threat.

On the hijack threat, the government has put all Air India planes operating in the South Asia region on high security alert and directed the deployment of sky marshals.

A directive has also been issued to all Indian missions abroad to sensitise the staff of the airlines, official sources said.

According to intelligence inputs, terrorist groups having allegiance with al Qaeda, Lashker-e-Toiba and Jamat-ul-Dawa were planning to hijack an Air India plane especially operating in or from SAARC countries — Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India as well.

Hijacking could be attempted by the terrorists from airports located at Yangon, Dhaka and Colombo. Security of planes operating to Bhutan has also been beefed up, the sources said.

Following this input, the Civil Aviation Ministry has directed all the airlines especially Air India to take extra steps besides asking Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to deploy sky marshals on aircraft operating on such routes, the sources said.

On its part, the External Affairs Ministry has asked Indian missions, particularly in SAARC countries, to brief the staff of the Air India and other Indian carriers about the threat.

Army Chief Orders Court Martial of Lt Gen Avadesh Prakash

New Delhi: Military Secretary Lt Gen Avadesh Prakash will face court martial proceedings in the Sukna land scam following intervention of Defence Minister A K Antony who overturned Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor’s decision on administrative action against the top officer. The court martial of Prakash was today ordered by Kapoor, making him the senior-most three-star general in the Army to ever face such action. The Army Chief’s decision has come two days after the Defence Minister advised a court martial of the military secretary on the issue. Prakash is due to retire Jan 31. Military Secretary Lt Gen Avadesh Prakash will face court martial proceedings in the Sukna land scam following intervention of Defence Minister A K Antony who overturned Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor’s decision on administrative action against the top officer.

The court martial of Prakash was today ordered by Kapoor, making him the senior-most three-star general in the Army to ever face such action.

The Army Chief’s decision comes two days ahead of Prakash’s retirement from military service on January 31.

“The Army Chief has ordered disciplinary action against Lt Gen Prakash, who will face a court martial in Sukna land scam. The Chief has stuck to the advice from Antony in the case,” Defence Ministry sources said here.

Prakash, who is considered close to Kapoor on account of being one of his eight aides, was found culpable in the Sukna land scam along with the then 33 Corps Commander Lt Gen P K Rath, his Chief of Staff Lt Gen Ramesh Halgali and the then Brigadier Administration Maj Gen P C Sen.

After the Court of Inquiry indicted all the General-officers in the case, Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen V K Singh, who is the Army Chief-designate, had recommended “termination of service” of Prakash and administrative action against the other officers.

However, Kapoor chose to order court martial of Rath and issued show-cause notice to others for administrative action, prompting Antony to ask why the officers, found culpable by the probe for the same offense under Army Act, were meted out different punishments and “advised” disciplinary action against Prakash too.

AI Crash: ¡®Human Error Possible cause

AI crash: 'Human error possible causeMangalore: Human error might have caused the crash of an Air India Boeing 737-800 plane that killed 158 people on Saturday, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said on Monday. Weather conditions and other factors at the time the plane reached its destination “looked absolutely normal for a regular touchdown and a safe landing,” Patel told an English news channel. “You can’t rule out a human error factor,” Patel said.

Only an inquiry could establish what exactly went wrong as the aircraft overshot the hilltop runway and crashed and plunged over a cliff and into a ravine at dawn on Saturday on the outskirts of Mangalore, he said.

Of the 166 passengers and crew aboard, only eight people survived the crash.

Patel said there was no rain in the area and visibility was good at the time of the plane’s landing.

Investigators and aviation officials searched through the wreckage of the Boeing 737-800 strewn across a hillside to try to determine the cause of India’s worst air disaster in more than a decade. They recovered the cockpit voice recorder, which they hope will give them important clues, PTI reported.

A four-member US forensic team also arrived in India to help in the investigation, said Harpreet Singh, an Air India spokeswoman.

By Sunday evening, 146 of the 158 bodies had been identified and given to grieving relatives for burial, said Arvind Jadhav, Air India’s Chairman and Managing Director.

Doctors were conducting DNA tests on 22 bodies that were so badly burned that relatives could not identify them, said Suresh Babu, an official at Wenlock hospital in Mangalore. They included a 2-year-old boy.

In nearby Uppala village, the relatives of brothers Mohammed Basheer and Aboo Backer Siddeeq were told it could take more than a week for the bodies of the two men to be identified, said their uncle BK Mohammed Haji.

“For two days we waited at the airport for the bodies,” said Haji.

“All the bodies were badly charred and very difficult to recognise.”

The two men were returning home from Dubai for the wedding of their younger sister on Sunday. The wedding was canceled and instead friends and relatives joined the grieving family under a canopy erected for the wedding to pray for the dead men.

The black box would be sent to New Delhi for decoding and further investigations, officials said.

The flight from Dubai to Mangalore carried some of the millions of Indians who work as cheap labor in the Middle East back to their families for a rare visit during India’s summer holiday season.

Aviation experts said the eight survivors were seated in the center of the aircraft, near where it broke open, and they managed to get out before a fireball engulfed the plane.

“In this case it was pure luck of the draw,” said Sidney Dekker, a professor of flight safety at the School of Aviation at Sweden’s Lund University.

“The luck of where you are in the airplane relative to how the fuselage disintegrates going into the ravine.”

The crash was the deadliest in India since a November 1996 midair collision killed 349 people.

Saturday’s crash happened when the plane overshot the runway, airline officials said. Aviation experts said the Mangalore airport’s “tabletop” runway, which ends in a valley, makes a bad crash inevitable when a plane does not stop in time.

Kapil Kaul, an aviation expert at the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation, said while India’s air safety record is good, he hopes the crash will push officials to establish an independent national safety board to ensure standards remain high as the booming economy drives more traffic into the skies.

Manmohan Singh

New Delhi: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has begun a meeting with chief ministers on the issue of combating a surging inflation.

Dr. Singh is likely to ask states to improve the Public Distribution System (PDS) and increase farm productivity.

The meeting will also review the implementation of the essential commodities act to check the hoarding of food items.

The meeting comes a day after a Congress Working Committee (CWC) over prices in which Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar came under fire for his handling of the crisis. Many Congress leaders hit out at the minister without actually naming him.

Congress party has faced flak from various opposition parties over the rising prices of essential commodities.

The wholesale price index rose 7.3 percent in December from a year earlier, its highest since November 2008, and accelerated from a 4.8 percent gain in November.

The rise was driven by near 20 percent jump in food prices, which rose on weak monsoon rains and flooding in parts of the country, but inflation in manufacturing products picked up to 5.2 percent from four percent in November, a sign that inflationary pressures were spreading to other sectors of the economy.

Sugar, in particular, has been a problem, with Congress party caught in the middle of competing demands from consumers who want lower prices while cane farmers seek higher prices for their produce.

The supply situation deteriorated further in recent months when Uttar Pradesh, seeking to help cane farmers, banned processing raw sugar, jamming 750,000 tonnes of raw sugar at ports.

PM Manmohan Wishes Peace in South Asia

PM Manmohan Wishes Peace in South AsiaPrime Minister Manmohan Singh marked India’s independence day Sunday with a warning to Pakistan that a recent resumption of dialogue would go nowhere unless Islamabad cracks down on militancy. In a wide-ranging speech that addressed domestic issues of high inflation and religious tolerance, Singh also called for an end to a cycle of violent separatist protests in Indian Kashmir and urged Maoist rebels to lay down their arms and begin talks.

The prime minister gave his annual address from the ramparts of the Red Fort in the Indian capital, which had been turned into a virtual fortress with nearly 80,000 police and troops guarding against a possible militant strike.

“As far as Pakistan is concerned, we expect from them that they would not let their territory be used for acts of terrorism against India,” Singh said.

“If this is not done, we cannot progress far in our dialogue with Pakistan,” he added.

Pakistan marks its independence a day earlier than India, but the government there scrapped official celebrations on Saturday out of deference to the millions of people affected by the worst floods in the country’s history.

In New Delhi, police shut down public car parks, closed markets and declared a temporary no-fly zone to prevent aerial attacks on the main Independence Day venue.

The United States warned in an advisory last week of a risk of attacks by Islamic militants in Indian cities.

Security was especially tight in Indian Kashmir where protests against Indian rule have claimed nearly 60 lives in the past two months.

Thousands were out on the streets of the Kashmiri summer capital Srinagar again on Sunday, which separatist leaders wanted marked as a “black day.”

Regretting the loss of life, Singh said his government stood ready to talk with all parties in Kashmir once calm had been restored.

“The years of violence should now end. Such violence would not benefit anyone,” he said.

“I believe that India’s democracy has the generosity and flexibility to be able to address the concerns of any area or group in the country,” he added.

Addressing the “serious challenge” posed by an increasingly violent Maoist insurgency which has spread across a large swathe of eastern and central India, Singh urged the rebels to lay down their arms.

“I once again appeal to (Maoists) to abjure violence and come for talks,” he said, adding that the security forces would “deal firmly with those who resort to violence.”

In the Maoist-affected central state of Chhattisgarh, rebels had put up posters ordering people to boycott independence day celebrations, calling them a “sham”.

Vowing to build an India “in which every citizen would have a stake,” Singh stressed the need to increase agricultural production and set up a food safety net that would allow “no citizen to go hungry.”

Singh defended his government’s recent decision to hike fuel prices, but acknowledged public discontent over the impact on already rampant food price rises.

“It is obvious that any person or institution cannot spend more than his income over a long period of time,” he said, promising that reducing inflation was a top government priority.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Rrejects All-Party Invite For Talks

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Rrejects All-Party Invite For TalksMirwaiz Umar Farooq And the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front have rejected the invitation to attend the all-part meet in Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK) led by Home Minister P Chidambaram.

They will instead submit a joint memorandum to the all-party delegation, JKLF chief Yasin Malik said. Speaking to Indian Television, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq said, "We have seen that only when a major crisis erupts, there are visible efforts to engage and understand our aspirations. As soon as immediate crisis subsides, political complacency restored."

"We choose not to meet your delegation and will send a joint memorandum to all. We have reiterated our four points for a peace process to begin. We propose talks between parliamentary committees of India and Pakistan," he added.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani of the Hurriyat Conference also refused to meet the delegation, calling it an "eye-wash".

The main Opposition leader Mehbooba Mufti of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) will send a team to meet the delegation.

The 39-member delegation will meet various political parties and people's forums in Srinagar on its two-day visit, and will focus on reaching out to as many Kashmiris as possible and hear out their grievances.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said feedback from the delegation will help evolve the government's strategy on J&K issues.

The IoK Valley has been in the grip of a vicious cycle of violence and over 100 people have been killed in clashes with security forces in the last three months.

My Hurt Addressed By Advani: Jaswant

My hurt addressed by Advani: JaswantNew Delhi: Rejoining the BJO nine months after he was unceremoniously thrown out for writing a controversial book on Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah, veteran leader Jaswant Singh on Thursday said his "hurt and humiliation had been addressed by LK Advani."

At a function organised to announce his re-induction into the party fold, 72-year-old Singh profusely thanked senior BJP leader L K Advani for taking the initiative to bring him back to the BJP of which he was a founder member.

“It is good to be back in familiar surroundings… I wish to unreservedly express my gratitude to Advaniji who took the initiative,” Singh said. Among others present were party President Nitin Gadkari and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.

Recalling his expulsion from the party at its ‘Chintan Baithak’ in Shimla in August last year, the MP from Darjeeling said, “I was hurt and humiliated by what I had encountered.”

Jaswant said facts about Jinnah could not be wished away. "Even Gokhale and Sarojini Naidu called him an icon of Hindu-Muslim unity," he said.

Advani said he was “very happy” that Jaswant Singh, whom he had met as an RSS pracharak in Rajasthan, has rejoined the party.

“I am very happy. With happiness there is also a sense of relief. I welcome him,” he said.

Gadkari said the “past is past” and hoped that Singh will work to make the party’s future bright. He said this was a day of “great happiness” for him and the party workers.

Singh was expelled from the BJP in August 2009 for praising the Pakistan founder in his book “Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence”.

Jaswant had gone on to criticise the BJP for its Hindutva links. Today also, he maintained his position.

"BJP would benefit by greater clarity on Hinduism," he told a TV channel, adding that Hindutva was a recent entry into the BJP lexicon. He also said that the Kandahar issue was closed between him and Advani.

While holding Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel responsible for partition, Singh maintained that Jinnah was secular, a position that was unacceptable to the Sangh Parivar. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had banned Singh’s book in his state.

After his expulsion, BJP also asked Singh to step down from the Chairmanship of Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee but he refused. He gave up the post in December last year.

Latest News On Ayodhya Verdict

Lates News About Update Latest News On Ayodhya Verdict, The disputed Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri mosque site has been contentious for over a hundred years now. The property dispute, or the title suit, went to court in 1949, soon after the idols of Ram and Sita were placed there. Today, the Supreme Court will decide whether the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court should pronounce verdict in the 60-year-old case just yet.

Chief Justice of India, SH Kapadia, along with Justice Aftab Alam and Justice KS Radhakrishnan will decide on petitioner Ramesh Chandra Tripathi’s plea to defer the verdict.

The High Court bench is to decide who the land belongs to and what stood here first, a temple or a mosque. One side in the legal battle claims that this has been a mosque for 400 years. The other side says an ancient temple was demolished to build that mosque. They say this is the birthplace of Lord Ram.

Read more at: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/the-ayodhya-dispute-a-timeline-55274?cp 1528: The Babri Masjid was built in Ayodhya in 1528. Hindu groups claim it was built after demolishing a temple.

1853: The first recorded communal clashes over the site date back to this year.

1859: The colonial British administration put a fence around the site, denominating separate areas of worship for Hindus and Muslims. And that is the way it stood for about 90 years.

1949: In December of that year, idols were put inside the mosque. Both sides to the dispute filed civil suits. The government locked the gates, saying the matter was sub-judice and declared the area “disputed”.

1984: The movement to build a temple at the site, which Hindus claimed was the birthplace of Lord Ram, gathered momentum when Hindu groups formed a committee to spearhead the construction of a temple at the Ramjanmabhoomi site.

1986: A district judge ordered the gates of the mosque to be opened after almost five decades and allowed Hindus to worship inside the “disputed structure.”

1986: A Babri Mosque Action Committee was formed as Muslims protested the move to allow Hindu prayers at the site.

1989: The clamour for building a Ram temple was growing. Fronted by organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, foundations of a temple were laid on land adjacent to the “disputed structure.”

1990: The then BJP president Lal Krishna Advani took out a cross-country rathyatra to garner support for the move to build a Ram temple at the site. VHP volunteers partially damaged the Babri? mosque. Prime Minister Chandrashekhar intervened and tried to negotiate with the various groups. But talks failed.

1991: Riding high on the success of Advani’s rathyatra, the BJP became India’s primary opposition party in Parliament and came to power in Uttar Pradesh.

1991: The movement for building a temple gathered further momentum with Karsevaks or Hindu volunteers pouring into Ayodhya. Bricks were sent from across India.

1992: On December 6, the Babri mosque was demolished by Karsevaks. Communal riots across India followed.

1992: On December 16, ten days after the demolition, the Congress government at the Centre, headed by PV Narasimha Rao, set up a commission of inquiry under Justice Liberhan.

1993: Three months after being constituted, the Liberhan Commission began investigations into who and what led to the demolition of the Barbri mosque.

2001: Tensions rose on the anniversary of the demolition of the mosque as the VHP reaffirmed its resolve to build a temple at the site.

2002: Early that year, as Uttar Pradesh headed for Assembly elections, the BJP did not commit itself to the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya in its election manifesto. The VHP, however, remains adamant and set March 15 of that year as the deadline for construction to begin. Hundreds of volunteers start converging on the site.

2002: On February 27, at least 58 people were killed in Godhra, Gujarat, in an attack on a train believed to be carrying Hindu volunteers from Ayodhya. Riots followed in the state and over 1000 people were reported to have died in these.

2002: In April that year, a 3-judge Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court began hearings on determining who owned the site.

2003: The court ordered a survey to find out whether a temple to Lord Ram existed on the site.? In August, the survey presented evidence of a temple under the mosque. But Muslim groups disputed the findings.

2003: In September, a court ruled that seven Hindu leaders, including some prominent BJP leaders, should stand trial for inciting the destruction of the Babri Mosque. But no charges were brought against Lal Krishna Advani, by now the Deputy Prime Minister.

2004: A Congress-led government returned to power at the Centre, after the general elections threw up what many saw as a surprise result.

2004: In November, an Uttar Pradesh court ruled that an earlier order which exonerated LK Advani for his role in the destruction of the mosque should be reviewed.

2007: The Supreme Court refused to admit a review petition on the Ayodhya dispute.

2009: The Liberhan Commission, which was instituted ten days after the demolition of the Barbri mosque in 1992, submitted its report on June 30 – almost 17 years after it began its inquiry. Its contents were not made public.

2010: The High Court bench in Lucknow hearing the title suit case, said it would pronounce verdict on September 24, Friday last. Days later, a plea to defer verdict on the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit was rejected by the Allahabad High Court.

The petitioner, Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, then approached the Supreme Court, which stayed the High Court verdict on Friday. The two judges who heard the case differed, resulting in the Chief Justice stepping in. Click Hare..

Maoist Attack: PC Accepts Failure in WB

New Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday accepted there were “indications of failure” in some aspects that led to the attack on the police camp in West Bengal and also questioned the silence of Naxal sympathisers and intellectuals. He condemned as outrageous the biggest ever attack by Maoists in West Bengal. “While there are indications of failure in some aspects, only a thorough review will reveal how the police camp with adequate strength was overrun, when there was day light, by the CPI (Maoist),” he said in a statement here. The Home Minister, who spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said the attack is “another outrageous attempt by the banned organisation to overawe the established authority in the State.”

“Every attack of this kind exposes the true nature and character of the CPI(Maoist). Their goal is to seize power. Their weapon is violence. No organisation or group in a democratic republic has the right to take to violence to overpower the established legal authority,” he said, criticising a number of “well meaning organisation” that find “legitimacy” in the armed struggle by CPI (Maoists).

Chidambaram said “unfortunately” this simple truth has escaped a number of well-meaning organisations that find “legitimacy” in the armed liberation struggle carried on by the CPI (Maoist).
