New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday held talks with Home Minister P Chidambaram on the current law and order situation in Kashmir. “We discussed the latest situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting was about to discuss how to equip the state police and the paramilitary forces with a technique to control crowd so that no innocent people are killed in protests,” Abdullah told reporters after the meeting here.
He said the meeting was about the latest development in the state and “my visit was to see what all we need to do in the coming days”.
On Funds
Jammu and Kashmir Government is contemplating to put in place a more concrete mechanism to check inflow of foreign funds to protestors in the state, Omar said.
“Yes, money is coming through various channels in the state. We are going to put in place some more concrete steps to stop the flow of funds.”
On Army
Omar justified the decision of deploying the Army in the state once again by saying his immediate priority was to end violence and stop the continuing deaths of civilians.
“The state government and various agencies assessed the situation and on the basis of that, a decision is taken on Tuesday last,” he said.
“Looking at the situation on the ground on Tuesday last and most importantly to put an end to the large protests and to the cycle of violence – people were protesting and dying – we took a decision,” Omar said.
On the withdrawal of the Army, the chief minister said, “As far as I am concerned, a decision has to be taken in the light of the result that it (deployment of Army) delivered and the result wanted”.
Omar said, “By the grace of god and the efforts that the state government has to take, there has been no casualty since Tuesday last”.
“There has been no casualty since Tuesday last and that is what we are trying. People are still coming to various places and protesting but fortunately not with the intensity what we have seen in the past,” he said.
The Army was a “part of state’s counter-insurgency grid. It is also part of necessary deployment on the LoC (Line of Control). There is no other role for the Army in Kashmir”.
On Opposition
Hitting hard at the opposition, the chief minister said, "They will raise the issue and if they are so much concerned about the worsened situation then why didn't they attend the all party meeting in Kashmir."
About 14 civilians have been killed in police firing in Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah, who arrived in Delhi this morning, is also likely to meet Defence Minister AK Antony later in the day.
