Jairam Ramesh

Jairam RameshNew Delhi: Months after Pratibha Patil forgetting she is the President of India and a week after Shashi Tharoor forgetting his twitter password, UPA's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh yesterday followed the trend. Clarifying his shocking remarks, made in Beijing, against his own government's China policy, he said: "I was not me. I seriously thought I was Digvijay Singh, yet again criticising Chidambaram. Jairam Ramesh, as a creature or concept, didn't exist in my mind then." Insiders didn't overrule minister's favorite BT-Grass as one of the reasons for such hallucinations.

The Home Ministry, alleged to be alarmist towards chinese companies by Jairam Ramesh, came out with a strong denial video in which P. Chidambaram kept shaking his head for 10-minutes. Later, an official clarification from the secretariat read: "We have recently installed China-made alarms in the Home Ministry offices. Probably that's what Mr. Jairam Ramesh meant."Though Jairam Ramesh is a high-profile minister, and the allegations are serious, the UPA top brass is not worried. "We have been ruling for just last 60-years. We are learning", said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Meanwhile, Indian T-20 team succesfully bowed out of T-20 World Cup in West Indies, giving the fans much needed time to sleep, wash and follow Sachin Tendulkar on Twitter.

The prime minister's remarks are crucial as it come ahead of a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meet later on Monday where the Kashmir issue will be discussed threadbare and a working solution to the present unrest is expected to be worked out. CCS is likely to meet on Monday evening to discuss the lifting of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) from parts of Kashmir valley.

Three persons were killed and two others were injured on Monday morning in Bandipura district of north Kashmir when security forces opened fire at the stone pelting mob to disperse them.

Earlier on Monday morning, curfew was imposed in parts of Budgam district stretching from Hyderpora to district headquarter town and three towns of Pulwama district as a precautionary measure in view of a protest march called by the separatists.

Curfew also remained in force in Srinagar city, Anantnag and Bijbehara towns in south Kashmir and Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district for the second day.

However, hundreds of Muslims defied curfews to hold protests against a group of Christians who tore up pages of the Quran in Washington, police said.

Basic Countries, Basic Country

Basic CountriesBasic Countries: CAPE TOWN – India, China, Brazil and South Africa Monday called for finalising a legally binding treaty on reduction of carbon emission latest by 2011 and indicated that the world could not wait indefinitely.

The third meeting of BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) ministers concluded in Cape Town April 25. The meeting was cut short by a day as Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had to leave early.

"The ministers noted news reports that domestic legislation in the US had been postponed and indicated that the world could not wait indefinitely, as it hinders our ability to reach an internationally legally binding agreement," said a joint statement released here Monday.

The statement said the ministers feel that a legally binding outcome should be concluded during climate change meet at Cancun, Mexico in 2010, or at the latest in South Africa by 2011.

"Developing countries strongly support international legally binding agreements, as the lack of such agreements hurts developing countries more than developed countries," it said.

The ministers said that negotiations should follow a two-pronged approach. One track is on long-term cooperative action to combatclimate change. The other is for developed countries to commit to what extent they will reduce their greenhouse gas emissions after 2012, when the current commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol runs out.

The ministers were of the view that it will not be possible to deal with mitigation actions by developing countries, without also dealing with support for those actions and the two-fold commitments by developed countries to both provide finance fordeveloping countries and reduce their own emissions.

"The ministers noted that the Copenhagen Accord provides for the scale of finance in short and medium-term. The commitments to provide finance must be operationalised. Both the USD 30 billion (2010-2012) and the USD 100 billion annually (by 2020) should be provided by developed countries," it said.

Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the National Development and Reforms Commission from China, Izabella Teixeira, minister for environment from Brazil, and Buyelwa Sonjica, minister of water and environmental affairs from South Africa also attended the meet.

The next BASIC ministerial meeting will be held at the end of July in Brazil followed by one hosted by China at the end of October.

Haji Mastan Death, Haji Mastan

Haji Mastan DeathLatest News Update About Haji Mastan Death: Mafia don Haji Mastan's daughter Shamshad Supariwala Tuesday filed an additional affidavit in a city court against Balaji Telefilms, the producers of "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai", demanding that they be shown the film before its release.

"We have filed an additional affidavit against the film. On one side the people behind the film are saying that the film is not based on Haji Mastan and they will issue a disclaimer stating the same, but on the other hand the actors in the film are repeatedly referring to Haji Mastan," Supariwala's lawyer Shushma Mishra told reporters here.

"Actor Ajay Devgn says in his interview that he is playing Haji Mastan. Even Kangana Ranaut is saying that she is playing Mastan's wife.

"We have demanded that the script of the film should be shown to us so that we can demand editing of the parts that we find are unacceptable," she added.

The affidavit filed in the city civil court in Churchgate Tuesday will be heard Thursday.

"I only want to say that if my father's image is defamed, I will surely protest," said Supariwala.

Produced by Balaji and Popcorn Entertainment, the underworld saga has been directed by Milan Luthria. Releasing Friday, it also stars Emraan Hashmi and Prachi Desai.

This is not the first time the movie has faced legal trouble. Earlier, Haji Mastan's adopted son filed a suit for an injunction order against the movie's release, but a city civil court refused to stay its release.

However, the court had directed the makers of the film to have a disclaimer at the beginning that the film has no resemblance with the life of Mastan, who died in 1994.
